  • Moluccan Cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis). Doodle was abandoned in a cage outside of the Santa Barbara Zoo in 2002. Stress led her to pluck out her feathers and mutilate her chest. The tiny Kevlar vest is essential to her rehabilitation.

  • Yellow-Napes Amazon (Amazona auropalliata). In August 2017, at nearly 40 years old, Kona suffered a stroke. Though she may never fully recover, Kona has vastly improved and remains in great spirits.

  • Harlequin Macaws are a a beautiful hybrid parrot only produced in captivity. Chico has a flair for speaking Spanish and English, and he adores Latino children.

  • Goffin’s Cockatoo (Cacatua goffiniana). Because her last owners did not give her nutritious food, companionship, or the room she needed, Darby plucked out her feathers.

  • Meyer’s Parrot (Poicephalus meyeri). Kiwi has a unique mannerism in which she lifts and rolls her foot inward, making it look like a fist. If another parrot, large or small, tries to invade her favorite play area, she will chase them down and show that fist as they retreat.

  • Blue-Crowned (Thectocercus acuticaudatus) & Dusky-Headed Conure (Aratinga weddellii). Cricket is blind in one eye, but is outgoing, friendly, and adores women. Garble tries to say words, but like his name implies, they come out all garbled.

  • Avian Ambassadors of the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary was printed in 2018. This 48 page book features photos and entertaining stories of 24 parrots. All sales go directly to the Sanctuary for the care and rescue of unwanted and displaced companion parrots.
