Leucism is a condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, or feathers, but not the eyes.

  • Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrines). Peregrine Falcons are the fastest species on the planet, logging speeds of over 200 miles per hour when they dive. Gavin suffered a broken wing that could not be fixed. He is now an education ambassador for the ORC.

  • Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus). Newton is an imprinted owl who has lived at the ORC since 2012. The beautiful glow in Newtons eyes is caused by the light cast on his nictitating membrane. This transparent third eyelid is found in birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, and is used for protection and to moisten the eye while maintaining vision.
