• The questioning eye of a Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) peers out from its tucked resting pose at the LA Zoo in California.
Primarily feeding on algae, plankton, and brine shrimp, it uses comb-like structures in its bill to filter food from the waters of its habitat.
The flamingo’s pink color is derived from the rich sources of carotenoid pigments in the algae and small crustaceans that the birds eat.
