  • Rehabilitating CITES listed Endangered Yellow Headed Amazons (Amazona oratorio belizensis). The Yellow-head parrot is a subspecies unique to Belize. Their ability to mimic has made them a highly sought-after for the illegal pet trade. In 2016 Belize Bird Conservancy estimated the population in Belize at around 1,200 birds. Thanks to the efforts of Belize Bird Rescue, and their wild release program this number will dramatically increase.

  • Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus). Newton is an imprinted owl who has lived at the ORC since 2012. The beautiful glow in Newtons eyes is caused by the light cast on his nictitating membrane. This transparent third eyelid is found in birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, and is used for protection and to moisten the eye while maintaining vision.

  • The questioning eye of a Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) peers out from its tucked resting pose at the LA Zoo in California.<br />
Found in South America from Ecuador to Chile and eastward into Brazil, the Chilean flamingo lives in coastal mudflats, estuaries, lagoons and salt lakes. Primarily feeding on algae, plankton, and brine shrimp, it uses comb-like structures in its bill to filter food from the waters of its habitat.<br />
The flamingo’s pink color is derived from the rich sources of carotenoid pigments in the algae and small crustaceans that the birds eat.

  • American Kestrel (Falco sparverius). Bob came to the ORC in 2005 as an imprint (hand raised by people). Imprinting is when birds do not recognize their own species or predators, cannot hunt, and think humans are their species. Bob landed on a person in Ventura when he could not find food.

  • Curl-Crested Aracari (Pteroglossus beauharnaesii). Tutti arrived at the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary after her two flock mates perished in an unfortunate accident during a winter freeze. Tutti is always cooing or chortling with laughter.

  • Turkey Vultures (Catharses aura). Wonder was found on the side of the road freezing and starving. As a result of being leucistic he has poor eyesight. Leucism is a condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, or feathers, but not the eyes.

  • A pair of endangered Scarlet Macaws ( Ara macao cyanoptera ) keep watch on their nesting tree near the Raspacullo river, Belize. A subspecies of the Scarlet Macaws in South America (Ara macao macao), there are an estimated 150-200 wild Scarlet Macaws in Belize. In 2003 the controversial Chalillo hydro-electric dam was built, resulting in the flooding of the only known area in Belize where Scarlet Macaws nest. Formed in 2012, the volunteer run and funded Scarlet Six Biomonitoring Team, a small team of community rangers, was formed out of a dire need to help protect the macaw chicks from heavy Guatemalan poaching.  In 2011, almost 90% of the active nests in the area were poached by Guatemalans, this number is now down to 30% due to their regular patroling of the nest sites along the rivers, via boat and on foot, and their very visible presence.

  • Moluccan Cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis). Doodle was abandoned in a cage outside of the Santa Barbara Zoo in 2002. Stress led her to pluck out her feathers and mutilate her chest. The tiny Kevlar vest is essential to her rehabilitation.

  • Meyer’s Parrot (Poicephalus meyeri). Kiwi has a unique mannerism in which she lifts and rolls her foot inward, making it look like a fist. If another parrot, large or small, tries to invade her favorite play area, she will chase them down and show that fist as they retreat.
